Joe & Mary McComb

Joe and Mary McComb met at Stephen F. Austin State University and married in May 1971. After they both graduated with their BA degrees, Joe returned to work in the family business and Mary taught for CCISD until they started a family in 1976. And what a family it is! Celebrating 52 years of marriage, they have five children and fourteen grandchildren.

Over the years Joe has been involved in various organizations, including the Children Heart and Health Institute of Texas, Texas Search and Rescue, the Baptist General Convention of Texas-Christian Education Coordinating Board, and Buckner Baptist Benevolence, to name a few. Additionally, Joe was called to public service in 1983 when elected to the Corpus Christi City Council District 5. During this time he founded “Operation Paintbrush,” which from its inception, has painted and repaired over 1,800 homes in the Coastal Bend with no cost to the homeowner. Joe has served in various offices, such as Nueces County Commissioners Court-Precinct 4, At-Large City Council member, and as Mayor of Corpus Christi with his term ending in November 2020.

Besides serving their community, the McCombs serve at First Baptist Church–Corpus Christi. Joe has been a faithful member and deacon for many years. Mary has been teaching a children’s Sunday school class for over 50 years!

When Joe McComb was asked, “With all your community and political involvement, how do you want to be remembered?” He stated, “I would like to be remembered as a good and loving husband, father, and grandfather.”
